Abstract:

The liver is a major regulator of lipid flux in the body. How lipid is stored and utilised in the liver in metabolically regulated manner is central to understanding lipid homeostasis and the consequences of its failure such as fatty liver disease, obesity, diabetes. We find that the metabolic state of liver (fed versus fasted) is correlated with an unusually high motion of lipid droplets along microtubules in hepatocytes. The molecular mechanism behind this observation, and how it controls lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion from the liver will be discussed.
