Current Research Interests

Development and application of molecular markers, genetic characterization, molecular mapping, introduction of baculovirus resistance through transgenic approach, identification and characterization of Z and W chromosome linked genes in silkworm and molecular analysis of antibacterial and antiviral immunity.

Towards this direction our group has developed and characterized microsatellites and FISSR markers in silkworm. “SilkSatDb” a comprehensive database of microsatellites has been constructed. Microsatellite linkage map has been generated based on biphasic backcross strategy. The utility of these microsatellites for population analysis has been demonstrated. Conservation of the microsatellite loci across different silkmoths has been studied. Microsatellites as a tool to understand evolutionary dynamics is another area of interest. Mutations in the motifs and flaking sequences as well as distribution of microsatellites in the genome are being pursued. Silkworm Z-linkage map has been constructed based on microsatellite markers, ISSR markers and sequence characterized RAPD markers. Analysis of Z-linked genes and syntenic relationship with other insects in terms of presence and functionality of Z-linked genes and dosage compensation are future interests. Deciphering sex-determination pathway in silkworm stimulates fundamental research interests in addition to having profound commercial connotations. We have initiated a study of sex-specific and sex-chromosome-specific expression of genes. Baculoviral infection causes 50% of all the infection in the silkworms, Bombyx mori. Developing transgenic silkworm for viral resistance through RNAi approach is being developed. Application of molecular markers for studying phylogenetics of basmati rice cultivars, analysis of varietal purity and quantitative detection of adulterants in the traditional basmati grain samples- represent additional research interests of our group.
