Research activities in the Laboratory of Bacterial Genetics are aimed towards understanding different physiological processes in the model bacterium Escherichia coli with the aid of genetic and molecular approaches. Three broad areas of microbial physiology are under study, namely water-stress adaptation, mechanisms of spontaneous mutagenesis, and interplays between replication-transcription-translation. The laboratory's motto may be phrased as :
